Acinonyx jubatus (Cheetah)

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is Africa's fastest land predator, built for pursuit hunting across open grasslands and savannas. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs rely on speed rather than strength, with a lean frame, long legs, and a flexible spine that enables bursts of up to 70 mph. They are found across sub-Saharan Africa, from the Sahel to southern Africa, with populations concentrated in East African reserves like the Masai Mara. Cheetahs are diurnal hunters, often resting during the heat of the day in grassland like this, and they are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and declining prey populations. The Masai Mara, which straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border in traditional Maasai lands, remains one of the world's premier destinations for observing cheetahs in their natural savanna environment.
