Balearica regulorum
The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) is a tall, elegant wading bird found across East and Southern Africa, with two subspecies distinguished by plumage and range. This endangered species inhabits open grasslands, wetlands, and cultivated areas, where it forages on the ground for seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. The Masai Mara's mosaic of savanna and grassland provides critical habitat for this crane, though populations have declined significantly due to wetland loss, pesticide use, and human disturbance. The species is known for its elaborate courtship displays and strong pair bonds, often seen in small flocks during the dry season.
