Loxodonta africana (African savannah elephant)

The African savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest terrestrial animal on Earth, found across savannas and grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. These highly intelligent and social herbivores spend much of their day foraging, using their trunk—which contains over 40,000 muscles—to gather grasses, leaves, and bark. Tsavo East National Park in Kenya's Taita Taveta region protects vast stretches of acacia bushland and grassland where elephant populations roam seasonally in search of water and vegetation. As keystone species, African elephants shape their ecosystems through their feeding habits, creating clearings and dispersing seeds across the landscape.
