Macaca mulatta (Rhesus Monkey)
The Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta) is a highly adaptable Old World primate found throughout the Indian subcontinent, from the foothills of the Himalayas to southern India. In the moist deciduous forests of central India, including the Seoni region of Madhya Pradesh, these social animals inhabit forest canopies and mixed woodland habitats where they forage for fruits, leaves, and insects. Rhesus Monkeys are known for their intelligence and complex social hierarchies, living in troops of up to 50 or more individuals. The distinctive bare face and skin coloring—particularly the red facial patch visible in this individual—becomes more pronounced with age and social rank within the troop.
