Northern Red-billed Hornbill

The Northern Red-billed Hornbill is a medium-sized hornbill found across the savannas and arid bushlands of East Africa, with a range extending from Ethiopia to Tanzania. This species is characterized by its slender, downward-curved red bill with a distinctive black stripe along the culmen, pale cream-colored head and neck, and dark brown-black wings and back. Northern Red-billed Hornbills inhabit acacia woodlands and semi-arid scrublands, foraging on the ground for insects, small reptiles, and seeds. They are typically seen singly or in pairs, often perching prominently on trees or shrubs. In Tsavo East National Park, these hornbills are common residents of the Northern Acacia-Commiphora bushlands, where they play an ecological role as seed dispersers and insect controllers in this dynamic savanna ecosystem.
