<image:caption>I’m not much of a small-in-frame guy. I always want feather detail, fur detail, eyes that jump out at you… Alas, these birds were always too far off, or perched in a tangle of branches. But, given they’re so striking, I’ll try to get past it.

The male Eastern Paradise-Whydah looks regal while perched, and seems almost like he’s swimming when in flight due to the undulating tail feathers. Sadly I never captured any flight video. Hopefully I’ve done him justice with a portrait.

      <image:title>What’s wrong with this picture?</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a photograph of a Yellow-billed Oxpecker. A few things to note about this bird… First, its bill is mostly red. But let’s be clear, there is some yellow. And a Red-billed Oxpecker… well… its bill is all red, no yellow at all (although they do have a little ring of yellow skin around their eyes).

Then you come to the next issue, and this seems kind of glaring. The ox that it's pecking. I mean, it doesn’t really look right for an ox, does it? That’s because it’s actually a Masai Giraffe - you can tell because they’re much taller than your average ox – in fact, this one’s probably 16 feet tall. I guess Oxpeckers play a little fast and loose with their definition of ‘ox.’ Turns out that what an oxpecker is pecking at is a very unreliable indicator of that animal actually being an ox. I personally saw them on animals from Antelope to Zebra (A to Z) (yet, never on an ox). I dunno, maybe there’s a joke in here somewhere about pecking order…</image:caption>

<image:title>Klipspringer Resting on the Shetani Lava Flow</image:title>
<image:caption>Klipspringers are little antelope that hang out in rocky terrain. They’re mostly nocturnal, and this guy was resting on the lava rock of Kenya’s Shetani Lava Flow in Tsavo West National Park. The lava flow covers 50 square kilometers and was formed about 500 years ago. His little devil horns are fitting as Shetani is Swahili for “Devil” (same root as ‘satan’ for the etymologists out there). But, the most intriguing thing about the klipspringer that you can see in this picture, are its hooves. Klipspringer means “Rock Jumper” in Afrikaans/Dutch and their hooves have evolved to grip rocks like little rubber suction cups. For scale, the tips of the hooves are about the size of a dime. You can see the suction cup shape if you look closely. They can jump 12 feet and land on a spot the size of a silver dollar - probably the Eisenhower version (38mm), not the Susan B. Anthony version (27mm) (neither of which had any silver in circulation, but I digress).

They also have hollow fur - hence the coarse grizzled look - </image:caption>

      <image:caption>Curves.

I love how the curve of this male impala’s impressive horns is mirrored by the curl of his tongue.

But… what’s he doing?

Impala have three distinct social groups, female herds, bachelor herds, and territorial males. This guy is a territorial male that had a harem of more than a dozen females. He was keeping his harem together and tasting the air for pheromones - moving from this tongue out expression to the classic Flehmen Response where he curls back his upper lip and bares his teeth while inhaling, enabling him to determine if a particular female is in estrus. You can see this behavior in many species of ungulates - deer and elk here close to home.

<image:caption>Had no luck finding a cooperative male lion out in the open for the classic photo. They all seemed to be far away, or surrounded by safari trucks, or resting under the cover of vegetation. So, i was forced to see if I could…

Wait, wait, strike that… wrong caption. Let’s start over.

“There ain’t no way to hide your lion eyes”*

Despite this male lion concealing himself from photographers (and the midday sun) under a clump of trees you can’t miss the intensity of that stare - just enough sun coming through to provide a nice catchlight. Hopefully the out of focus foreground leaves make for an interesting composition - I think it works.
